3.3.1 Halifax and
the delayed passbook
On 8 February 1997 I returned my father's passbook to the
Halifax for them to update it with the new name (as advised by
the Halifax Bognor Regis Branch). However, by 22 February
1997 I had not received the updated passbook back and this delay
was delaying a tax rebate that the estate was due. Despite
various phone calls having been made, I decided to invoice the
Halifax £30 for the inconvenience caused and to compensate me
for the delayed receipt of the tax rebate.
Halifax settled
the invoice as a "gesture of goodwill", and a copy of their
letter is below, but look at their weasel
words. "bringing to my attention your disappointment". rather
than "identifying the unsatisfactory performance of the
Halifax".
"I regret that
you feel these levels have not been met" rather than "I
apologise for us failing to meet our normal standards of
service".

However, even by 2 March 1997,
I had still not received the passbook back, and I sent a follow
up fax to progress it's return.

So, it would
seem that the Halifax could neither give me accurate advice at
their Bognor Regis Branch and neither could they promptly
process a name change at the Portsmouth Centre. The amended
passbook was returned later.
