2. Family History
2.2 As a boy
Our parents were honest decent folks who brought both my brother
and myself up well, teaching us the difference between right and
wrong.
While my father worked in Central London for a modest wage, my
mother worked nights at a local hospital and also performed
tailoring repairs for a local shop to buy my brother and myself
those extra treats which otherwise we could not have afforded.
We were also taught the virtues of saving; my parents never
borrowed money and we were taught the same (with the exception
of a mortgage). We were both always encouraged to save, and my
mother in particular was always saving what she could in her
Halifax Building Society account.
Largely as a result of encouragement from my mother, I passed my
GCE 'O' and 'A' levels and went on to read Electronics at
Southampton University. After spending three years in the
electronics industry as a design engineer, I changed career and
became a qualified accountant.
Both my brother and myself are deeply indebted to our late
parents for everything that was done for us, though regrettably
like most children we only came to really appreciate everything
later in life.
And so it was from a very early age we came to respect the
Halifax Building Society - it was almost one of the family, a
society you could trust. But all this was to change in such a
way we could never have foreseen. I know for certain that
if my late father had known about the events that were to take
place, he would have been dismayed and shocked.
